The Tutankhamun Dress

In the old days, when news travelled slowly enough to be an event, and when new discoveries sparked new trends, a dress was born. Not just any dress. Woven in lightest beige gauze net, cut straight up-and-down in strictest flapper style, heavy with thick silver bullion fringing and intricately embroidered with gently gold thread, this dress shuns the regular sequin and is instead finished with the shiniest, brightest green shards of BEETLE WINGS! A fitting homage to the Egyptian scarab!

Yes it is a dress in a million. Yes it is unique. Yes it is around 90 years of age, coinciding with the discovery of King Tutankhamun's burial chamber. It should probably be in a museum. Which would make the fantasy of sporting it on new years eve all the more excessively indulgent; the sartorial equivalent of bathing in vintage champagne. You should probably be blonde. Bottle blonde would be even better. Maybe with wavy hair center parted, or otherwise a jet black bob.

I'm taking a deep breath and letting this beauty go. I've not been able to bring myself to part with it till now. It is hanging elegantly in my Etsy shop, awaiting the new rightful owner.

I've stumbled upon a similar beetle-work fabric on Pinterest, from a blog which is well worth a visit if you love fabrics http://www.piedaterre.com
